MC Altair v0.7

MC Altair v0.7 has been released. See the technical details and download the files here or use the updated setup tool.

What's new

This upgrade addresses problems with the player interface when resizing or repositioning elements, including fullscreen mode. All player elements (buttons, video screen, etc) now use the same coordinate system for positioning. Previously, elements in the control panel were positioned relative to the top left corner of the control panel - now they are positioned relative to the top left corner of the player.

Tooltip readability is improved and you can set the color.

This version involved a fairly major code re-write so it's quite possible a few bugs will emerge. There is also more work to be done with the new coordinate system before it's all working completely as I want, but I thought it was important to introduce the new system as soon as possible. If you're in no hurry to upgrade you might like to wait and see if there any any minor updates over the next few weeks.

There are three new variables:

tooltipTextColor: Tooltip text color (hex)
tooltipBackgroundColor: Tooltip background color (hex)
playerAutoResize: This is enabled by default and should normally be left on. The player automatically resizes and/or repositions elements when resizing occurs, unless you have specified a position/size value.

Roadmap to v1.0

Once I've got the new coordinate system bedded in, here are some of my plans leading up to v1.0:

- Color and size variables for all remaining elements
- Separate config options for fullscreen mode
- Logo/watermark option
- Improved integration with streaming servers
- More user-friendly setup tool, including a simple 3-step guide.

MC Altair v0.6

MC Altair v0.6 has been released. See the technical details and download the files here (http://www.mcmediaplayer.com/about/history/altair/0.6.html).
In the setup tool...

MC Altair v0.6 has been released. See the technical details and download the files here.
In the setup tool, the new options appear in the Player and Media Files tabs.

What's new

First of all, this version does not address any issues related to the players' size or co-ordinate system. I decided to make v0.6 about video playback and v0.7 about the player interface (I've actually already done some preliminary work on v0.7 and it's looking good, but that's another story).

There are five new variables in this version:

streamingServerURL: Specify a streaming server for RTMP files.
defaultBufferLength: Amount of video to buffer before playback begins.
fpAction: Automatically play video when the player loads.
defaultEndAction: What to do when the video reaches the end (show preview image, pause on first frame, pause on last frame, show blank screen or automatically repeat. Also show/hide the First Play button)
defaultStopAction: What happens when the stop button is clicked. Similar to defaultEndAction. You can leave this undefined - it defaults to the best match based on the defaultEndAction setting.

Other additions include a mute button, H.264 version checker and percentage buffer indicator.

Depending on how well this version works out, I hope to resume work on v0.7 within a week or two. Within a couple of weeks I should be able to guess how far away that version will be from release.

Moving the support forums

Firstly I want to mention that MC Altair v0.6 should be released some time this week. It includes rtmp (streaming) support plus a few minor additions and fixes. I'll post another announcement when I've released it.

In the meantime I want to talk about splitting the media player support forums away from the mediacollege forums and moving them to the mcmediaplayer.com website. I know this isn't ideal for those who participate in both forums, but to be honest there's not many people that fall into this category. More often I find that new users get confused about which forum to post in, and the fact that the support forum is on a different website doesn't help.

I really need to make the whole thing very easy for new visitors. Now that a lot of people are finding the player via the new website, it can be confusing for them having to go to a different site (mediacollege.com) to get support.

In addition, it's becoming more of a hassle for me personally to keep the two sites operating in tandem. I just think it makes more sense to make these two sites completely separate, although I'll obviously encourage people to come here for all the general video-making resources.

As far as registration goes, I'll attempt to transfer all existing login details and archived messages to the new site. From then on, any new forum registrations will only apply to the respective websites. This means new users will have to register twice if they want to participate in both forums. Hopefully I'll be able to make that process easier in future, but for now I don't think many people will be affected.

If anyone has any serious objections, or if you can think of anything I might have overlooked, please let me know ASAP. Thanks.
